EMBC’S HISTORY – OUR STORY

Early Beginnings: A Seed is Planted

Though there are differing accounts of the beginnings of EMBC, most agree the camp's roots lie in the work of Reverend Burtch, a Baptist preacher who arrived in Eastern Montana in 1928. He ministered at the Gregg School and fostered a small congregation among local families. Around 1931, together they built an open-air chapel on his land, known as "Burtch Grove." These services drew many, with baptisms for as many as 26 converts held at once in Burns Creek or nearby stock dams. However, the harsh realities of the Dust Bowl era took their toll, and the Burtch family relocated to Idaho in 1936. Despite their departure, the spirit of community worship persevered at the South Valley Schoolhouse, eventually leading to the establishment of the South Valley Church as a permanent gathering place.

From Humble Beginnings to a Growing Vision

In the early 1940s, as an extension of this early ministry, the Klempel family began hosting summer camps on their homestead. Area pastors conducted Bible studies and evangelistic meetings, attracting young people from surrounding areas. A small, screened structure offered basic shelter from the elements and insects. As interest in camp ministry grew, the need for a permanent location for a larger, area-wide Bible camp became evident. Ed Holzworth generously donated forty acres of land adjacent to the Klempel homestead, conveniently located near a well-traveled road.

Building a Legacy: The Early Days of EMBC

Around 1950, barracks from a nearby Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp were relocated to the new site. These structures were repurposed as dormitories for boys, girls, speakers, and a kitchen building. In July 1950, a dedicated group of camp pioneers came together to form an official association. A Quonset hut was erected later that year to serve as a chapel. The following year saw further improvements: a concrete floor laid in the chapel, stucco applied to the barracks, and electricity installed. 1953 brought a 1,000-gallon water tank, providing much-needed showers for campers (boys and girls on alternate nights!). This period also saw the installation of bunk bed frames. In 1954, an old schoolhouse was relocated to the property, becoming the dedicated craft house.

A Legacy of Faith That Continues

As the years unfold, God's blessings continue to flow upon EMBC. Improved facilities, new activities, and dedicated staff members all contribute to the ongoing ministry of the camp. While the physical structures and faces have changed, the core mission of EMBC remains constant: to provide a place for all ages to grow in their faith, build relationships, and experience the transformative power of Jesus Christ.

Memories Made: Fellowship, Faith, & Transformation

The early days of EMBC were a time for all ages. Stories abound of simpler times – encounters with wildlife, basic outdoor facilities, and washing dishes outdoors. More importantly, these memories are woven with tales of fellowship, friendships forged that have lasted a lifetime, the joy of finding salvation in Christ, lives transformed by the Holy Spirit, and the call to follow God's purpose.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one can come to God except by Him

Jesus was born of a virgin, was God in the flesh, and gave His sinless life as a payment for the sins of anyone who will accept Him as Lord and Savior

Jesus was raised three days after His crucifixion and lives in Heaven to make intercession for believers. He has promised to return one day to receive Christians unto Himself at which time we will inherit eternal life with Him in Heaven.
